Book Review: Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga
The Hidden Language
Timeless Books
1988
The book explores the spiritual and mystical aspects of Yoga. It approaches Yoga as an art—the asanas being a poetic bodily expression of that art. Each of the asanas are presented as symbolic gestures, unifying body, mind and breath. As one sinks deeper into each asana/gesture, it becomes a mudra, a sacred expression of a deep inner truth. Different asanas create different meditative states of mind. This approach to Yoga is a process of self-discovery (svadhaya) without confrontation—gentle self-discovery—but requires courage to acknowledge the negative side of the self. The author says that the end of Hatha Yoga is “divine absorption”—body, mind and consciousness merge into the soul (Atman). The book is a valuable tool for any serious student of Yoga.
